How to Animate Different Types of Travel Routes with anim8map

Last updated: September 23, 2025

When you create animated travel maps for complex journeys, you need to choose the right travel mode for each leg. anim8map offers a multitude of distinct travel modes. Each mode is designed to accurately represent a different type of route. Whether you're documenting a cross-continental flight, a scenic road trip, or a multi-modal adventure combining air travel, transit, and road segments, selecting the appropriate travel mode ensures your animation tells your story authentically.

Supported Travel Modes in anim8map

  • Air TravelWhen you select air travel mode, anim8map automatically chooses realistic flight paths between your departure and arrival airports. The animation will show an airplane icon following the curved flight path. Air travel mode is perfect for international trips, domestic flights, or any journey where you've taken a plane.
  • WaterwaysFor water-based travel, anim8map selects from popular maritime routes across oceans and seas. This mode is ideal for cruise ship journeys, ferry crossings, or sailing adventures. You can customize your waterway animation by choosing from three vehicle icons: sailboat, small motor boat, or cruise ship. The icon selection only changes the visual appearance, it doesn't change the actual route calculation. The same maritime routes are chosen regardless of which vessel icon you use.
  • Road TravelBoth car and motorbike modes automatically compute the best driving route between your selected endpoints. These modes follow actual road networks, considering highways and major roads. When you select motorbike as your travel mode, the route optimization takes into account motorcycle-specific considerations (e.g., roads that are particularly enjoyable for motorcycle travel).
  • Train and Transit NetworksThe train/transit mode utilizes existing railway networks. Your animated route will follow actual train tracks and railway corridors. This mode is perfect for documenting rail journeys, whether you've traveled by high-speed train, regional rail, or urban transit systems. This mode works particularly well for European train journeys or cross-country rail trips.
  • Path OnlyThis option is recommended for segments with unusual travel modes, or when you'd only like to show the route progression without showing a vehicle.

Combining Multiple Travel Modes

You can combine different transportation modes within a single animation. For example, a single trip might involve flying to a destination, taking a train to another city, and then driving to your final location. The transitions between different modes are handled seamlessly and automatically.

How to Change Travel Mode for Route Segments

Customizing the travel mode for each segment of your trip is straightforward. It happens during the second step of the video creation process, when you're adding stops to your journey.

To change the travel mode for a specific segment:

  1. Navigate to the "Add Your Stops" step in the video creation process
  2. Look for the dropdown menu located to the left of each location name
  3. Click on the dropdown to reveal the list of available transportation modes
  4. Select your preferred mode of transportation from the available options

Important note: The travel mode you select determines the route and vehicle type from the previous stop to the selected stop. When you're setting the travel mode for "Berlin" in your trip, you're actually defining how you'll travel to Berlin from the previous location.

Tips for Creating Engaging Multi-Modal Animations

To make the most of anim8map's travel mode features, consider these best practices:

  • Match your animation to your actual travel experience for authenticity
  • Use different travel modes to add visual interest and tell a more complete story
  • Preview your animation to ensure smooth transitions between different travel modes
